The third version of Conficker, the computer virus that is causing internet security experts headaches, could become active today. Companies, governments and web users are alert. The threat could also be a false alarm, considering the fact that today in April 1. In its previous versions Conficker infected 15 million computers.
Microsoft considers the virus to be dangerous and has offered a 250,000 dollar award for catching the makers of the virus. The FBI has warned internet users not to open suspicious e-mails.
According to IBM Internet Security Systems, in Asia 45pct of computers are already infected, in Europe 31pct, 14pct in South America and 6pct in North America. Infected computers connect to servers of the hackers but the consequences are not clear.
The new version, also known as "Conficker.C", "Downadup" or "Kido", is able to create a so-called ''zombie'' network, computers connected to a remote server without the owner of the computer knowing it. In October Microsoft launched update MSO8-067 which protects computers from the Conficker virus.

that's such BS. There's no evidence that'll activate today or tomorrow or a week from now. Worms are a bit different from viruses. I think Microsoft has some patch for it. Wikipedia has a page on it...

on eading into this, i found that most of the well known anti virus packages can remove this worm, and microsoft's patch was issued in 2007 some time. so if you're fully up to date, you're ok, that is if you take all other precautions too of course.

Nothing happened. Still, make sure all antivirus/antispyware are updated. They should be even when there is no virus threat.
